What is the Greater Kruger and where is it?

If you’ve ever dreamed of a proper African safari, the Greater Kruger is probably high on your list. It’s one of those places that stays with you long after you’ve left — a vast, unfenced wilderness where the Big Five roam freely across endless bushveld. But what exactly is the Greater Kruger, and why does it feel so special? Let me walk you through its story, its incredible surroundings, and why Hoedspruit (and Oase) make such a perfect base.

The Story of Kruger National Park

The tale begins back in 1898, when the South African President of-the-time Paul Kruger realised the wildlife in the Lowveld was disappearing fast because of uncontrolled hunting. He helped create the Sabi Game Reserve to protect it. A few years later, the Shingwedzi Game Reserve was added further north.

In 1926, the two reserves were combined and officially became Kruger National Park — named after the president who fought to save it. It was one of the first national parks in the world to open to tourists, with the first cars driving through in 1927.

Over the years, Kruger grew, but the real magic happened in the late 1990s. That’s when the fences between the national park and many neighbouring private reserves came down. This created the Greater Kruger — a huge, connected ecosystem where animals can move naturally across boundaries, and conservation is a shared effort.

What is the Greater Kruger Today?

Simply put, the Greater Kruger is Kruger National Park plus all the private reserves that border it on the west — places like Sabi Sands, Timbavati, Klaserie, Balule and many others. Because there are no fences, it all feels like one enormous, living wilderness.

This is where you get that true sense of freedom. In the private reserves, safaris tend to be more intimate, with fewer vehicles and expert guides. It’s the best of both worlds: the vast scale of the national park combined with personalised, exclusive experiences.

The Kruger to Canyons Biosphere

The Greater Kruger sits right in the middle of something even bigger — the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-listed area recognised in 2001.

This massive region stretches from the Mozambique border all the way to the dramatic Drakensberg escarpment. It includes not only Kruger but also the spectacular Blyde River Canyon (one of the largest canyons on Earth), beautiful forests, grasslands, and the famous Panorama Route viewpoints like God’s Window and the Three Rondavels.

It’s an incredibly rich landscape, home to a huge variety of birds, animals, and plants. The rivers that flow through it — including the Blyde along which Oase is located — are the lifeblood of the region. The biosphere is a wonderful example of how conservation, tourism, and local communities can work together.

Why Hoedspruit is the Perfect Safari Hub

Nestled on the western edge of this biosphere, the friendly little town of Hoedspruit has quietly become South Africa’s safari capital. Its location is ideal — right between Kruger National Park and the stunning Blyde River Canyon.

What makes it even better is how easy it is to reach. Hoedspruit Airport (HDS) has regular flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, so many guests fly straight in. The town itself is small, welcoming, and has everything you need — shops, restaurants, and a relaxed vibe.

From Hoedspruit, you’re never far from great game viewing, canyon views, or whichever reserve you’re visiting. It just makes everything feel simpler and less tiring.

Oase’s Special Spot in the Greater Kruger

This brings us to Oase. Our lodge sits on a beautiful 530-hectare private reserve right along the banks of the Blyde River in Hoedspruit. You’re right in the heart of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere, surrounded by the same wild landscapes that make the Greater Kruger so magical.

Best of all, we’re super convenient: just 10 minutes from Hoedspruit town and only 20 minutes from Hoedspruit Airport. You can literally land, drive through the gate, and be relaxing with a drink overlooking the river in less than half an hour — no long, dusty transfers.

At Oase, you get to enjoy that true Greater

Kruger feeling — unfenced, open to wildlife, peaceful, and personal — while everything else is close at hand.

Whether you’re watching giraffe from your deck, enjoying a lazy breakfast at the Tea Garden, or heading in Kruger on a game drive when the mood strikes, it just feels right.
