Yes, that's right—it's winter here in South Africa and the rest of the southern hemisphere. At Oase, winter generally means warm days and cold nights, with temperatures around 23°C (73.4°F) during the day and 12°C (53.6°F) at night.
Winter is also our driest season, even though it's currently raining as I write this—a rare occurrence! Typically, between May and October, we receive little to no rain. This dry spell has a significant impact on the flora and fauna of the area. Most indigenous trees in our region are deciduous, shedding their leaves during the winter months, which creates challenging conditions for browsing and grazing wildlife such as zebras, wildebeests, and impalas. Even giraffes, with their long reach, find it harder to get a good meal.
However, as the bush thins out, game viewing takes on a whole new dimension. With less vegetation on plants, shrubs, and trees, visibility into the bush greatly increases, making it easier to spot wildlife that would typically be hidden behind thick foliage. The dry season draws animals to water sources, offering spectacular sightings at rivers and waterholes, and the reduced cover means predators like lions and leopards are more frequently seen as they move through the landscape in search of prey.
One of the other great things about winter in the bush is evenings by the fire. The fireside atmosphere at night is magical, bringing our guests from all around the world closer together. It's a fantastic platform to share stories of the day's adventures while enjoying a great meal and a glass or two of amazing local wines. The crisp, clear nights also provide stunning stargazing opportunities, as the southern hemisphere sky reveals constellations and celestial wonders rarely seen in other parts of the world.
With cool nights and warm, sunny days, winter at Oase offers perfect weather for outdoor activities. The clear blue skies and temperatures often feel as warm as the summer climates our guests left behind. Whether you're soaking up the sun, spending a lazy day by the river, or exploring the wildlife of Oase on foot, the days are simply perfect. For the adventurous, winter is an excellent time for bush walks, guided by experienced rangers who provide fascinating insights into the ecosystem and its inhabitants. Birdwatching is also particularly rewarding, as migratory species return and local birds are more active in the cooler temperatures.
For those looking to relax, winter days are ideal for lounging by the pool or enjoying a spa treatment with views of the surrounding wilderness. The serene environment and mild weather create a tranquil retreat, allowing guests to unwind and reconnect with nature.
Winter at Oase is a unique and enchanting experience, offering a blend of adventure, relaxation, and the unparalleled beauty of the African bush. Whether you're here for the wildlife, the landscapes, or simply to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Oase in winter is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories.
